This page provides information about the valid indicative distribution map for the ecosystem functional group F2.7 Ephemeral salt lakes. For older or alternative maps, see here.

Methods

Here is the methods summary for Map code and version: F2.7.web.mix v1.0.

Location of ephemeral lakes was taken from global lake databases (Lehner and Döll 2004; types 1 and 3 from Messager et al. 2016), intersected with estimates of ephemeral surface water (classes 9 and 10 from Pekel et al. 2016) and the distribution of arid and semi-arid, endorheic basins (Linke et al. 2019). Occurrences were aggregated to 10 minutes spatial resolution. Occurrences were aggregated to 10 minutes spatial resolution.

Datasets

GLWD-2004 (Lehner and Döll 2004):

Source of validated distribution records. Resolution: ca. 1km2, static. Accuracy evaluation: quantitative (subsets).

GSW-1.1 (Pekel et al. 2016):

Source of Surface water phenology. Resolution: <1km2, periods/epochs. Accuracy evaluation: >90%.

HydroAtlas-1.0 (Linke et al. 2019):

Source of Hydrography. Resolution: <1km2, static. Accuracy evaluation: derived from sources.

HydroLAKES-1.0 (Messager et al. 2016):

Source of Hydrography. Resolution: <1km2, static. Accuracy evaluation: quantitative (subsets).

Processing

Processing steps used in this map are: Reclassification :: Buffering :: Aggregation.

Map evaluation

This map is considered to be a Fine quality map series based on the following characteristics:

Concept alignment is Semi-direct,general.

Ground observations are NA.

The accuracy evaluation Quantitative accuracy assessment, documented, quantitative.

How to use the data

Available files

Following maps are considered current and valid indicative distribution maps for this ecosystem functional group. Web navigation maps are optimised for use in webapps, but they have similar methods and differ only in details of format and processing.

  • Indicative Map (code: F2.7.IM.mix, version v1.0)
  • Web navigation (code: F2.7.web.mix, version v1.0)
