This page provides information about the valid indicative distribution map for the ecosystem functional group M1.4 Shellfish beds and reefs. For older or alternative maps, see here.

Methods

Here is the methods summary for Map code and version: M1.4.web.orig v1.0.

Major and minor occurrences of shellfish beds and reefs were identified by overlaying a global map of oyster reefs (Beck et al. 2011) on marine ecoregions (Spalding et al. 2008), and then clipping to the extent of the marine ‘shelf’ base layer as mapped by Harris et al. (2014b). Occurrences were converted to 30 arc second spatial resolution.

Datasets

GSFM-2014 (Harris PT et al. 2014):

Source of topography and geomorphology. Resolution: variable (polygons), static. Accuracy evaluation: quantitative (subsets).

MEOW-2008 (Spalding MD et al. 2008):

Source of biogeographical range. Resolution: variable (polygons), static. Accuracy evaluation: qualitative (experts judgement).

Oyster-reef-list (Beck MW et al. 2011):

Source of validated distribution records. Resolution: variable (points), static. Accuracy evaluation: known records.

Processing

Processing steps used in this map are: Selection :: Clipping.

Map evaluation

This map is considered to be a Coarse quality map based on the following characteristics:

Concept alignment is Semi-direct,general.

Ground observations are no.

The accuracy evaluation Known records,undocumented.

How to use the data

Available files

Following maps are considered current and valid indicative distribution maps for this ecosystem functional group. Web navigation maps are optimised for use in webapps, but they have similar methods and differ only in details of format and processing.

  • Web navigation (code: M1.4.web.orig, version v1.0)
  • Indicative Map (code: M1.4.IM.orig, version v1.0)

You can download geospatial data for this map from the following sources:
